Wireless carrier Verizon announced this week that it will acquire internet dinosaur America Online (AOL) for $4.4 billion. Verizon retained the Antiques Roadshow to underwrite and value the purchase.
Antiques Roadshow was created in the United Kingdom in 1979. The company’s first US valuations took place in 1997.
Verizon’s initial offer to purchase was not initially answered by AOL executives. The company dismissed the offer as a Nigerian email scam that many AOL users fall victim to daily. The original Verizon offer requested that AOL kindly send $50,000,000, and then Verizon would promptly wire $4,400,000,000 back into AOL’s bank account.
